Green Dream

The Green Dream project has been conceived as a group exhibition of younger generation of Belgrade artists who have presented their views on the relationship between nature and the contemporary trends in arts. They have also presented solutions aimed at animating the attractive public area of the Botanical Garden, “Jevremovac”. Green Dream exhibition on the Planet Earth Day on 22nd April 2009, at the Botanical Garden “Jevremovac”.

Students had their exhibition within the Green Dream project as a result of their workshops, as organized by (FAA) Faculty of the Applied Arts Belgrade as part of their subject tapestry. The very milieu of the Botanical Garden is a stimulus for creative ideas enhancing the functioning of contemporary artistic works in public spaces with accentuated ecological and natural character. The works do not affect the appearance nor functioning of the Botanical Garden. On the contrary, with their form and structure they blend into the ambient offering a new vision of the relationship between arts and nature. These include video works projected on the screens placed on the trees, interactive video game animation Green Dream - video game sonnet, installations and objects. All these displays have a common characteristic and that is the strong awareness of the ecological problems and the influence of man on our natural surroundings. In the middle of the artists attention is the use of visual images in indicating the potential models for solving some of the current pressing problems.

At a ceremonious opening of  Green Dream art exhibition which was organized in honour of the „The Planet Earth Day “, the following officials attended it: Nemanja Komazec (State Secretary in the Ministry for  Environment  and Urbanism in the Government of the Republic of Serbia), H.E. Ron J.P.M. van Dartel (Ambassador of the Kingdom of Netherlands), Srđa Popović ( Adviser to the Deputy Prime Minister for  EU Integration at the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister for EU Integrations in the Government of the Republic of Serbia), 
Zoran Cvijanović (Adviser to the Deputy Prime Minister for  EU Integration at the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister for EU Integrations in the Government of the Republic of Serbia), Goran Trivan (Secretary of the Secretariat for the Protection of Environment), as well as the author of Green Dream exhibition Biljana Biba Vicković and Prof. Dr. Petar Marin (Head of the Institute for Botanies and Botanic Garden “Jevremovac”), planted three types of plants  of one of the oldest and the most decorative woody horticulture species (salix alba variatet babylonica, salix caprea pendula i salix caprea) in front of the Botanic Garden “Jevremovac”.

Walk on illuminating keyboard and enter into the world of artistic fantasy. Play the entire space and all the changes on a big screen. While playing you change the existing and compose your own Green Dream sonata. Each illuminating keyboard is a combination of sounds from nature and animation. Test the different keyboards in the grass and create a fantastic ecological world, which you can record on your own DVD.

Green Dream interactive installation - video game sonnet, was presented after 22nd April: As part of Sustainable development days on 10th May, 2009 at Kalemegdan, on  2nd December 2009, in the room 300, organized by  EkoFON there was a presentation of Green Dream video game sonnet from 03rd  – 06th December at Science festival – Belgrade which was visited by 17,000 mainly young visitors from the whole of Serbia. Ever since two hundred years ago when humanity entered the industrial revolution, the destruction of nature and natural resources continues. Mad desire for progress and wealth led us to the point where we are initiating ecological calamity of unparallel kind which threatens to annihilate years of evolution, something not even asteroids nor numerous natural disasters were able to do, and that is - destroy life on the planet. One of the first things man as a conscious being faced was nature. He originated in it, he continues to live in it, and in the final end he returns to nature. With the advancement of human thought, the idea of nature changed.

Now, the prevailing concept of nature is based on problems, which treat it as an object of scientific research and promoting a complex philosophical thought enabling a more profound insight into nature. In question are two types of nature. One is nature as such and the other is transformed nature created by man. This, nature, created by man is often in direct collision with the genuine nature. 
It is indeed sad when the idea of the untouched nature and vegetation becomes only a dream. Today, the contemporary man is faced with countless challenges and threats. There is no doubt that the greatest is of an ecological nature. In a situation when modern cities resemble more cement and asphalt jungles, small green oasis and parks are rare exceptions and real wealth. Already in ancient times, parks and nature were places for enjoyment (locus amoenus), an association with golden periods of mankind, as well as places where human thought rose to its hights. Green Dream is entirely dedicated to preserving the human environment and nature.

The authors of the program and the artists will in a highly creative manner express their attitude on the pressing problem of the ecology as well as the importance of the recycling process. The idea is to enable the public to gain a new insight and perception of environment with creative ideas promoting healthy surroundings. The motto of the exhibition is, “Our environment if nurtured can become a garden, and if neglected it turns into a waste dump”.

These include video works projected on the screens placed on the trees, interactive digital animation, installations and objects. All these displays have a common characteristic and that is the strong awareness of the ecological problems and the influence of man on our natural surroundings. In the middle of the artists attention is the use of visual images in indicating the potential models for solving some of the current pressing problems. The technological nature of the digital works in themselves contributes to overcoming the ambivalent position of nature and contemporary art. The contemporary art, partly due to the character of its production and presentation, separated itself from nature as a source of inspiration and presentation through galleries has further contributed to this situation.

These art works displayed throughout the garden are aimed at encouraging the visitors to search and be more actively engaged in gaining a better perception of ecological pollution and the destruction of nature. One of the main features of today’s technology is the fact that we are no longer able to determine a clear line between the natural and the artificial exclusively by visual means, that is, what has been accomplished through technology. The interactive installation of the Green Dream is a combination of the artistic work and advanced technology in which the participant himself through his own action influences the final appearance of the work.

The Green Dream consists of a network of sensors, placed in the grass, over which the user will walk. Depending on the combination of keyboards and sensors used by the visitors, the video beam (which will be installed among the trees) will display a specific projection. The particular feature of this projection is that it will be unique and it will depend exclusively on imagination and skills of each participant. 
The works of the students of the Faculty of the Applied Arts in the Botanical Garden are a result of a workshop and they represent a fast, informative and limited in time exercise in the field of contemporary application of the textiles. The main topic is ecology, more specifically the motto of the exhibition is, Our environment can be a garden or a waste dump depending on whether we take care of it or not. 
The aim of this project is to draw attention through art, to the relationship between nature and the contemporary technological society and the place of nature in the urban structure of the city.

Furthermore, the selection itself, the structure of the works, and the exhibition site itself aims at more active engagement and better understanding of the wider segment of the population of recent problems in our natural surroundings. Leaving the galleries and entering the unusual areas for display and employing the universal visual language of the modern art production, it is possible to connect seemingly unrelated components such as nature and technology.

This is not a glorification of technology, nor a vision of interaction between technology and nature. They are a medium through which it is possible to achieve empathy, a sensual impression, which is today more than ever before in collision with the empirical experience of our daily life. This empirical experience will help us finally understand the serious impact of the pollution and the destruction we all sometimes unconsciously create.
